General Breastfeeding Information

Clermont County Public Health supports the use of the listed resources; however, co-sleeping with an infant is not recommended under any circumstances. The Clermont County Child Fatality Review Board looks at the deaths of any infant under the age of 18 to determine if the death is preventable or not. Clermont County has not had a death from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) when proper sleep recommendations have been followed. Proper sleep recommendations include placing the infant on the back for all sleep periods, keeping the sleeping area at approximately 68-72 degrees, keeping the sleep surface free from pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, bumper pads and positioners, and room sharing but NO co-sleeping with adults or siblings on shared surfaces such as adults beds or couches. Additional recommendations include offering a pacifier when placing an infant to sleep, breastfeeding, dressing baby in light clothing, no alcohol or tobacco use either prenatally or postnatal, following your health care providers’ recommendations regarding vaccines and using safety-approved cribs and bassinets for sleep time.
