How to Change from Septic to Sewer

Residential

Identify and hire a contractor for lateral installation, tap to main if needed and septic system abandonment.  Contractors that typically perform this type of work include plumbing contractors, excavation contractors and sewer contractors.  Determine whether contractor will obtain necessary permits or if homeowner will be responsible.

  1. Individual responsible for permits must contact Permit Central and obtain a sewer connection and septic changeover permit.  Permit fees and sewer tap-in fees are required to be paid before permits are issued.
  2. If installation work involves work in the road or right of way an additional permit is needed from the township (if home is on township road) or the County Engineer (if home is on County road) or from the Ohio Department of Transportation (if home is on a State Route)
  3. Contractor performs work.  Septic tank needs to be pumped, collapsed and filled.
  4. Contractor calls for inspections.  Inspector needs access to inside and outside of home at time of inspection.
